As accessibility for people with disabilities is one of the key features of the websites we design, we always test our websites thoroughly using a range of technologies, checks and (most importantly!) …people!
Most other website companies rely on automated accessibility checking systems but these cannot test for many of the major requirements of accessibility. They also often confuse web standards with accessibility. Worst of all - they can’t tell you in plain english many of the major problems websites have!
We are looking to expand our pool of testers so we can provide an even more thorough guarantee to our clients that their new websites are accessible. Not only because we “follow the rules” of good accessibility but because they have been tested by human beings:) We also are often asked to audit existing websites, which can be done so much better by using ‘real’ people.
Job Description:
At Access-by design, we like to have a “pool” of testers who can be called upon to assess the websites we design. For these website testers, we need a variety of people who use adaptive technologies (everything from major brand screen-readers to keyboard only browsing etc) or who consider themselves disabled, and as such, have specific needs from the web (eg visual-aided navigation, alternative text or colour options etc). We also like to work with a number of people, even if they are using the same technologies, as they may have different levels of Internet use/experience. Sadly, as we require a large variety of testers per site we are unable to give any guarantee of regular weekly work.
Time Required:
Occasional/Negotiable - on average a single tester may be asked to asses up to 3 websites a month. A tester will then need to spend an hour testing a specific website and compiling a report. Reports will usually be answering a questionnaire but this will be adapted to suit the physical requirements of the tester (eg audio submission)
The possibly of more work may be available as our company grows and more features for our clients are offered. However, testers may request to work as little or a much as availability allows.
Location:
Testers do not need to be in the company locality as testing may be done remotely and reports submitted electronically.
Training:
Testers will be trained (either in our accessible premises or remotely) to look for specific features/problems on websites in accordance to current legislation and accessibility standards. Testers will be paid for their training time.
Additional Requirements:
Testers must have access to the internet and preferably, email.
Status:
Testers will be hired on a freelance basis.
Rates of Pay:
£10.00 per website (on receipt of report)

Job Description
As a sales person for Access-by Design you would make contact with businesses on the South Coast* and enthusiastically present why an Access-by Design website that they can run will advance and grow their company. After training, you will be able to speak knowledgeably to them about changes in the internet, flexible web design, web accessibility and Search Engine Optimisation. You will be able to access any site they may have and make informed comments on whether they need a new website, addtional accessibility features or simple updating. You will be able to present our packagings and pricing in a persuasive way without pressure or “hard sell”.
If appropriate, you will liaise with the client, through the design process until they are entirely happy with their site and chosen features.
Time Requirement
When looking for sales opportunities, your time can be entirely self-directed. You will be free to choose how much time you spend on locating and pursuing sales.
If we are happy with your training status/abilities you may be given the opportunity to be your client’s agent with our company. This does mean however, that you must be able to meet clients at their convenience. This may require far more time flexibility than the above.
Sales people are free to choose not to be agents at all.
Location:
Although we are based in Chichester, West Sussex, we are looking to recruit sales people from all locations within Sussex. However, own transport or a willingness to use public transport is a requirement of this job
*It is also possible to undertake a sales role anywhere in the UK and to be in contact with us solely, electronically. However, applicants wishing to pursue this “virtual” opportunity must have:
- Internet access including broadband and email
- The flexibility of time to be the sole agent with their sales-generated clients
- Completed and passed training with Access-by Design by attending a training session in Chichester
- Agree to regular monitoring of their performance and communication skills by Access - by Design
Training:
Sales People will be trained to be knowledgeable about the Internet as whole, our company and website design principles and techniques (including current legislation, accessibility standards and webs standards) Sales people will be paid for their training time.
Additional Requirements:
- Own transport or a willingness to use public transport is a requirement of this job
- Sales people must have access to the internet, email and telephone.
Rates
- Sales People work on a generous commission-only basis
- Sales People who also act as company agents receive a substantially higher commission
- Only 7 completed sales are rewarded by a brand new laptop. Higher sales are rewarded by higher incentives!
